For decades, pharmaceutical companies have released a large number of medications for anxiety-related issues – the effectiveness of which varies hugely from patient to patient. Since the turn of the millennium, however, an increasing amount of research has been focusing on the use of all-natural CBD oil as a treatment for the condition, with many studies yielding extremely promising results. So, is CBD oil a worthwhile remedy for anxiety?
There are currently over 30 studies in relation to the effectiveness of CBD oil for anxiety, each supporting the idea that CBD has helped the experimental subjects reduce their anxiety in a variety of situations including social anxiety, PTSD, anxiety from withdrawal, and social anxiety.
While many people have the ability to control the worries and stress that arise from a range of situations, those who suffer from anxiety have trouble keeping these emotions from affecting their everyday life.
Anxiety can exist in a number of forms. These include panic disorders, whereby an individual can suddenly find themselves experiencing many symptoms including sweating, shortness of breath, a raised heartbeat and dizziness as a result of a given stimulus. Another form of anxiety comes in the form of phobias, where a person develops a fear of a given object, pattern, experience, or living creature that prevents them from functioning in what many would consider a reasonable fashion. Social anxiety arises from the fear of interacting with others in normal activities such as answering the phone, being able to converse, or having an innate fear of criticism and being judged. The final mainstream form of anxiety comes in the form of PTSD, or post-traumatic stress disorder. PTSD is well-known for its effect on soldiers who have experienced horrific events during wars, but as the name suggests, PTSD can be suffered by anyone who has bared witness to, or undergone an extremely disturbing occurrence.
When deciding upon a medication for a patient, doctors always have to consider the possible adverse reactions they may experience during its usage. When a dispenser provides CBD oil for anxiety, however, they can be sure that the worst possible side effects are relatively minor, and extremely short-term in duration.
CBD is a cannabinoid harvested from the cannabis plant that does not produce the feeling of being ‘high’. Instead, it is capable of interacting with the receptors in our endocannabinoid system (ECS).
Traditional pharmaceutical medications are designed to target the 5-HT1A receptor, which controls the release of serotonin into the brain – the neurotransmitter that affects how we feel when presented with a stimulus. The more serotonin that is released, the more likely a patient is to experience lower levels of aggression, impulsivity and hunger, while simultaneously boosting abilities such as social interaction, sex drive and conditional inhibition.
Scientists believe that CBD is capable of interacting with the same 5-HT1A receptor, and can produce the same outcome as the equivalent pharmaceutical drug.
The use of CBD oil for anxiety, therefore, with further research could one day be accepted as an all-natural alternative to possibly dangerous pharmaceutical drugs, but without the worrying side-effects.
