For those who have been in a state of chronic pain, it can often get to a point where they will try any number of drugs – legal or illegal – in order to gain some relief. In fact, there are individuals who have gone to extraordinary lengths to gain a respite from the pain they feel day and night.
CBD oil has been used for pain relief by people for many years as an alternative to prescribed
medication thanks to its lack of side effects, unlike opioids which are often extremely addictive. While most of the evidence of CBD oil’s medical properties is anecdotal, many peer-reviewed scientific studies are planned for the future.
By definition, chronic pain is pain that lasts for longer than six months, either continuously or intermittently. Some forms of chronic pain are as a result of fibromyalgia, whereby an individual suffers severe trauma and even though the injury heals, the pain remains. Sadly, there isn’t always a cause for the pain, leaving doctors at a loss for treatment. More often than not, those who suffer from the condition are given medication to ‘manage’ the pain, hoping that it will disappear on its own.
In many cases, a combination of physical therapy, exercise, meditation, and medication are used to help the patient. Unfortunately, many of the pharmaceutical drugs used for pain relief are opioids such as codeine, oxycodone or morphine – all of which are highly addictive, and if overused can irreparably damage the liver.
In the US alone, more than 115 people die every day due to an overdose of opioids – an issue known as The Opioid Crisis. It originated in the early 1990s when pharmaceutical companies claimed that their branded prescription opioids such as Fentanyl, Demoral and Percocet were not addictive. This claim resulted in many doctors prescribing them in greater amounts to large numbers of patients for pain relief.
By time the medical community realised that the claims made by Big Pharma were lies, it was already too late, and by 2015 over two million people were suffering from opioid related substance abuse with 33,000 recorded deaths from overdoses per year.
While the scientific community is only just beginning to see the possible benefits of CBD oil for pain relief, there have been a large number of subjective claims made by patients who have been suffering from chronic pain for many years that the use of CBD products has improved their quality of life immeasurably.
At present, researchers can only make educated guesses as to why CBD oil appears to be such an effective treatment for chronic pain. The most widely held belief is that when the cannabidiol suppresses the release of neurotransmitters in the brain, they interrupt the neural pathway that helps the brain to register pain from different parts of the body, therefore giving the patient a desperately needed reprieve from their condition.
In one of the few major studies carried out on the subject, researchers found that a large number of patients questioned over a time period of almost thirty years believed that CBD was a very effective method of managing their pain, especially those suffering from multiple sclerosis.
Research into the medical benefits of CBD oil is very much in its infancy, and as a result, more studies under laboratory conditions are needed to scientifically prove beyond all reasonable doubt that CBD oil is an effective product for pain management. However, if future objective research can corroborate the subjective anecdotes provided by those who prefer to use CBD oil as their preferred method of pain management, then CBD oil has a bright future indeed.
