What is the difference between hemp oil and CBD oil?

Over recent years there has been a surge in popularity of hemp oil and CBD products with these hitting the mainstream. Brands in the beauty, wellness and holistic market are all looking to add their own cannabis derived products into the marketplace. In this article, we take a look at the differences between hemp oil and CBD oil and help clear up any confusion you may have between the two of them.

Plant species

Both CBD oil and Hemp oil come from the Cannabis Sativa species of the cannabis plant and this will often be portrayed on packaging as showing a cannabis leaf. And while CBD oil is made using the flowers and leaves of the plant, hemp oil is made exclusively from hemp seeds. This is an important difference as hemp oil does not contain any form of cannabinoids as these are found in the leaves and flowers of the plant.

What is CBD oil used for?

CBD or cannabidiol is just one of the over 100 cannabinoids that are found in the cannabis family of plants. CBD oil has anti-inflammatory, anti-anxiety, pain relief and antioxidant properties. Unlike THC which is a psychoactive cannabinoid, CBD does not make you high and offers a lot of the benefits of cannabis without the negative effects.

CBD oil has a wide range of uses and can be found in topical creams and products for pain relief and relaxation, in edibles and tinctures and also in e-liquids to be used in vaporisers and electronic cigarettes. From pain relief and anxiety to depression and sleep, there are many uses for CBD based products.

What is Hemp oil used for?

Hemp oil or hemp seed oil as it is also known is manufactured from the seeds of industrial hemp plants with the seeds being cold pressed to create the oil. Unlike CBD oil, hemp oil doesn’t contain any cannabinoids such as CBD. The oil has been available in health food and wellness stores for decades and the oil is high in antioxidants and natural fat acids such as omega 3 and 6.

While hemp oil is good for us and is widely considered to be a superfood, it doesn’t offer the same benefits as CBD oil. Hemp oil is most commonly found in beauty products, lotions, soaps, shampoos and as a carrier oil for other products.

How is CBD oil different to hemp oil?

The main difference between the two is that CBD oil contains the cannabinoid CBD while hemp oil is completely free from all types of cannabinoid. As hemp oil doesn’t contain any form of CBD it doesn’t offer any of the associated benefits.

Why is there confusion between CBD and hemp oil?

This is mainly due to marketing and people jumping on the CBD bandwagon. There are a lot of products available which call themselves cannabis sativa oil, hemp oil, virgin hemp oil and other names and use the cannabis plant leaves on their marketing. However, a lot of these products do not contain any form of cannabidiol.

Both CBD and hemp oil are wellness ingredients so they are not harmful if mixed up but those looking for CBD oil will not get the same benefits from hemp oil. Pain relief, improved sleep, and reduced anxiety are all benefits of CBD oil but none of these will be achieved through the use of hemp oil.
